What are your pool chemicals doing to your bathing suit? While swimming is a lot of fun and a great way to cool down, the chemicals in the water can do a number on your bathing suit! Use these tips to prolong the life of your favourite swimsuits.
Wash your bathing suit ASAP
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when it comes to protecting your bathing suit against chlorine is wearing it multiple times without washing it. Even sitting in your bathing suit for a long period of time after you get out of the pool can be a catalyst for long-term damage.
When possible wash your bathing as soon as possible. But hold on, throwing it in the washing machine is not the best way to care for your swim suit – it requires a little bit more TLC. Always use cool water to wash your bathing suit and hand wash with a gentle soap whenever possible to avoid further stresses on the material. Considering putting a couple of tablespoons of vinegar in the mixture you use to wash your swim suit —vinegar has a neutralizing effect on chlorine.
Tip: If you are at somebody else’s pool or don’t have time to fully wash your bathing suit, always try to at least rinse it off with cool water. This will eliminate a large amount of the chlorine in the meantime.
Hang to dry
After you are done washing your bathing suit, hang it somewhere cool to dry. The heat from the dryer or hanging it in the sun can cause further damage to your bathing suit as it will dry the material out too much. Always make sure that your bathing suit is fully dry before you wear it again.
Give it a break
If you are someone who swims a lot, it is necessary to have more than one bathing suit on hand so that you can rotate. Swim suits last much longer when they are allowed a few days to take a break between swims. This gives you ample time to wash and dry your bathing suit properly while also not missing out on a swim.
Look for chlorine-protected products
When shopping for a bathing suit, consider looking for products that are protected against chlorine or that are fade resistant. Some brands even offer a guarantee for how long the bathing suit will last. If you cannot find a product that has these protections on it, soak your bathing suit in vinegar to create a protective effect on the suit yourself. Soaking in vinegar protects against chlorine and dye leaking.
