Keeping Your Backyard Safe this Halloween

Keep your pool safe on Halloween

A certain amount of mischief accompanies Halloween. Even with a little good natured rule bending it’s important to take safety into account. For pool owners this means minimizing the risks associated with your pool. Eager trick-or-treaters will sometimes cut through back yards or hop fences in search of short cuts. In the dark, amidst the night’s excitement, not to mention vision obscuring masks, someone could easily fail to notice a dark pool covering.

To keep your backyard absolutely safe, even for intrepid and unexpected trick-or-treaters, we recommend purchasing a safety cover for your pool. Here’s why.

Other Pool Covers Don’t Match Up

A safety cover is the best option for maintaining a clean and safe pool area. Safety covers are designed to support a large amount of weight and do not have any spaces that a person or animal can slip through. Although it’s not recommended you can walk across a safety cover.

Here’s how other covers and safety options fall short:

Tarps are popular because they have a lower initial cost and keep debris out of the pool. However, they do not make your pool safer. If someone unwittingly attempts to walk across your pool, then the tarp will be unable to support their weight.

Nets don’t provide the same level of safety as a safety cover and will not prevent debris from falling into your pool. In this way they don’t provide the same coverage that you will want for Halloween and beyond.

Fencing provides protection in that it keeps people away from the pool when not in use. However, a fence can be climbed and if some Halloween revellers are sneaking through backyards then they might not think twice about jumping one more fence. A safety pool cover is more certain. Even if someone reaches your pool then the water is covered and can be walked across.

Solid or Mesh Safety Covers?

Depending on your preferences you can choose between safety covers made of mesh or solid vinyl. The primary difference between the two materials is maintenance.

With a mesh cover you will have virtually no winter maintenance. The mesh allows precipitation to drain into the pool, or for snow to collect, melt and then enter the pool. Larger debris will gather on the cover, but will be blown away without any work from you. The downside is that sediment and some UV light will get into the pool, which can stimulate algae growth. You may also need to drain your pool in the case of excessive precipitation.

Solid safety covers require a little bit of maintenance. To maintain their strength debris and snow must be swept off of the cover. If left alone the weight will begin to impair the cover’s function. But a solid cover will block out all light, sediment and debris so when you open your pool in spring the water will be relatively clean and free of debris or algae.

One final advantage that both of these safety covers share: they can be custom designed for your pool. These features will ensure that no matter how your Halloween goes, your pool area will be secure.
