Choosing the Right Winter Pool Cover

As the end of summer approaches, it’s time to start thinking about closing your pool. So, keep in mind that the pool cover you use will affect how you use your backyard in the winter, and how you’ll open your pool in spring.

For your consideration, we’ve reviewed the most common types of pool covers, so you can decide which best suits your lifestyle.

Standard Winter Covers

A winter cover is essentially a large tarp that you secure over your pool. They’re your least expensive option and will shield your pool from sunlight (helping to prevent algae growth), as well as debris. Winter covers are easy to maintain, so opening and closing the pool won’t feel as intimidating to new owners.

On the other hand, winter covers don’t last particularly long (only one to three years). Families with pets or young children should also consider that these pool covers can’t support much weight, and therefore don’t offer much protection from falling in, which should be a serious consideration for families with children.

Safety Covers

The safety cover’s main feature is that it can support a lot of weight (some can support up to 4000 pounds)! Now the primary purpose of a safety cover is to prevent a tragedy from happening in your backyard, and these safety covers are a must for anyone with young children, but there are also other benefits to consider. With a safer backyard, you can hold parties during the off-season keeping a large portion of the yard “off limits”.

Safety covers come in two types: mesh and solid. Both catch debris and stop sunlight from promoting algae growth. The main difference is in regards to drainage. Water and snow are filtered through mesh covers, which makes them easier to maintain in winter. The trade-off is that you will likely have to replace the water when you open your pool.

To maintain a solid safety cover you need a pump, which will probably need to be replaced every few years. Though in the spring you can jump in your pool almost as soon as the cover’s off, which is huge benefit for anyone looking for a low-maintenance solution (you’ll still need to test and adjust for pH).
